How to Use Height Charts
These height charts show the percentage of US adults who are shorter than each given height. For example, if you're at the 75th percentile, you're taller than 75% of people in your demographic group.
Understanding Percentiles
- 50th percentile (median): Exactly average height - half of people are shorter, half are taller
- 25th percentile: You're taller than 25% of people (shorter than 75%)
- 75th percentile: You're taller than 75% of people (shorter than 25%)
- 90th percentile: You're taller than 90% of people - considered very tall
- 95th percentile: You're taller than 95% of people - exceptionally tall
Data Source and Methodology
Our height charts are based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which provides the most comprehensive and representative data on US adult heights. The data includes measured heights (not self-reported) from thousands of participants across diverse demographic groups.
Height Differences by Gender
The charts clearly show the well-documented height differences between males and females. On average, US adult males are approximately 5.2 inches (13.2 cm) taller than females. This difference is consistent across most percentile levels.
Using Charts for Health and Fitness
Height percentile charts are valuable for healthcare providers, researchers, and individuals interested in understanding population norms. They're commonly used in medical settings to assess growth patterns and in research to control for height-related variables.
